Communication Policy
Last updated: 2/01/2026
The following terms apply to all SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging communications sent through or received by Sunlight.
Consent to Receive SMS Messages
By providing your mobile phone number to authorized staff during legal intake, case onboarding, or other case management interactions - or by initiating a text message to a staff member's assigned phone number - you expressly consent to receive SMS text messages from Sunlight and authorized staff members related to your case.
Consent to receive SMS messages is not a condition of receiving legal services or any other services through Sunlight.
Types of Messages
SMS messages sent through Sunlight may include:
Case coordination and communication with your assigned staff member
Appointment and meeting scheduling
Follow-up questions and information requests
Responses to your inquiries
Court date reminders and hearing notifications
Task reminders and deadlines
Case status updates and other time-sensitive alerts about your case activity
Other communication that supports your legal or case management needs
Messages may be sent by authorized human staff members as part of an established professional relationship, or as automated transactional notifications related to your case. Sunlight does not send marketing, promotional, or advertising messages via SMS. All messages are directly related to your case and the services provided through the Sunlight platform.
Message Frequency
Message frequency varies based on your case activity and the needs of your assigned staff member. There is no fixed number of messages per week or month.
Message and Data Rates
Message and data rates may apply to SMS messages sent to or received from Sunlight, depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Sunlight is not responsible for any charges incurred from your carrier.
Opting Out
You may opt out of receiving SMS messages at any time using either of the following methods:
Reply STOP: Reply STOP to any SMS message. You may also reply CANCEL, UNSUBSCRIBE, QUIT, or END.
Account settings: Log into your Sunlight account at app.getsunlight.org and disable SMS messaging from your account settings.
Your opt-out request is processed immediately. You will receive a single confirmation message, and no further SMS messages will be sent to your number unless you choose to re-subscribe.
To re-subscribe, reply START to the same number, re-enable SMS messaging in your account settings, or contact your assigned staff member directly.
Opting out of SMS messages does not affect your ability to receive legal services or access Sunlight through other channels.
Help
For assistance with SMS messaging, reply HELP to any message. You will receive an automated response with your staff member's name, your organization's support contact information, and instructions for opting out.
You may also contact us at support@getsunlight.org.
SMS Delivery
SMS message delivery is subject to the capabilities and policies of your mobile carrier. Sunlight does not guarantee that text messages will be delivered or received, and is not responsible for delays, failures, or errors in message delivery caused by carrier networks, device issues, or other factors outside our control.
Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for:
Providing an accurate mobile phone number to authorized staff
Promptly notifying your assigned staff member or the organization if your phone number changes
Notifying us immediately if you provide or have been associated with a phone number that is no longer yours or has been reassigned to another person
Securing your mobile device, as anyone with access to your phone can read SMS messages
Sensitive Information
Standard SMS text messages are not encrypted. You should not send sensitive personal information, protected health information, Social Security numbers, or other confidential details via text message. For sensitive communications, use the secure messaging features within the Sunlight application at app.getsunlight.org or contact your staff member by phone.
Privacy
Your phone number and SMS message content are handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy, available at https://getsunlight.org/privacy. We do not sell, share, or use your phone number or SMS message content for marketing or advertising purposes.
Changes to SMS Terms
We may update these SMS terms from time to time. Material changes to how we use SMS or collect consent will be communicated via the Sunlight application and, where feasible, via a text message to enrolled phone numbers. Continued use of SMS messaging after notification of changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
